The first advice i recommend if you want more realistic drawings, is to use the grid method to get your outlines better. This site explains it better than i could :D [link]

For shading, instead of trying to shade the dark areas using one dark layer... build the shading up gradually, with layer after layer. I get the most even layer I can, then blend the pencil lines together using cotton wool, then apply another layer, slowly building the dark layers up.
The cotton wool is good for blending and getting nice smooth, even areas without pencil lines. see here [link]
Also I use a sharp eraser to create detailed highlights. For example if you're trying to draw hair against a dark background, I've seen people shading the background whilst trying to leave the shape of the hair as blank paper. I would create the dark area, then use an eraser to erase the light hair INTO the dark background. Hope some of that helps, feel free to note me for any more help :) Dan

good values and nice shading, but from this angle looks a bit off. You should scan it for a better resolution and higher quality. Great drawing

It's a brilliant sketch, except the front rim is slightly uneven. It's a shame as it is such a great drawing otherwise.
